Two big western heritage events along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway this weekend are sure to please. Chief Joseph Days in Joseph is a classic western rodeo, with professional cowboys, top quality rodeo stock, a big parade, and a healthy dose of wild west fun and excitement. The rodeo grounds also happen to have one of the prettiest settings in the nation! It’s all happening RIGHT NOW! Click here to learn all about the weekend.
At North Powder, just off the interstate between La Grande and Baker City, it’s huckleberry time. The North Powder Huckleberry festival features an early fun run/walk, breakfast at the school, a parade at 11 a.m., live music from noon into the night, a fire station barbecue, craft and food vendors, commercial booths, games for kids, a puppet show and a crazy mud volleyball tournament. The Huckleberry Hot-rod Show-n-Shine is at the heart of the activity, with muscle cars and hot-rods on display and 8 categories of prizes.
You will find lots of huckleberry flavored treats of every kind and, this year, fresh huckleberries for sale – just picked in the nearby mountains. The entries in the Huckleberry Dessert Contest are auctioned off at the Fire Station during the barbecue. A street dance ends the day, with Mark Stratton Lost Creek Road providing the music. This is the eighth year for the event and the town really rolls out the red carpet. Come join in the fun.
