Idaho Power announced today,visitors considering a trip to Hells Canyon can now check the status of the road between Oxbow and Hells Canyon Dam by calling 541-785-7251. A recorded message will provide road closure updates. We encourage folks to use it before heading that way.
The road was closed on Monday, February 6, due to snow and rockslides and may not reopen for several days. Motorists are urged to use caution throughout the canyon; winter weather has affected road conditions and increased the presence of deer, elk and other wildlife at lower elevations.
Please note, Forest Road 39 on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest remains under seasonal closure due to snow and will remain so until further notice in late spring. Unless signs and announcements on Tripcheck.com indicate otherwise, all byway communities, including Joseph, Imnaha, Halfway and Oxbow areas are open to travelers, However, the roads connecting Joseph and Imnaha at the north end with Halfway and Oxbow at the south end are not passable. Please travel with caution.
